How a private well water system works
A private well is your own small water utility. Water sits in an aquifer below the frost line; a submersible pump pushes it up through the casing, out through a pitless adapter, and along a buried waterline into the house.
Inside, water fills a pressure tank that stores a buffer and keeps the pump from cycling every time you open a tap. From there it may pass through treatment — an iron filter or softener if your water needs it — before reaching the taps.
Understanding the parts helps you describe a problem accurately when you call. “No water at all” points somewhere different than “pressure fades after a minute” or “the pump never shuts off,” and a clear description gets the right person out faster.
